I Need A New Fitness Routine

When my daughter was little, I found the need to fit in some kind of workout on a semi-regular schedule. It didn’t always work out, but I did my best to stick to a plan. Back then, it was a trip to the rec center in the evenings while my husband stayed home with our daughter. I would load up a playlist on my mp3, and I’d try all the cardio equipment.

From there, I started to work on some goals. I went from walking a on the treadmill to a little walk/jog combo. Then I started to see how long I could do a slow jog without taking a break. Eventually, I found myself training for half marathon, and I completed the Disney Princess Half Marathon.

A couple years later, my fitness routine had shifted a bit. We moved to a new neighborhood, and became fully immersed in tennis leagues and strength training classes at the rec center. I was loving it. I was feeling healthier than ever, but it was starting to get tough to fit it all in. Then we had that weird pandemic.

By this time, I was approaching my mid 40s, and it was a good time for another shift in the routine. Tennis was on a modified schedule, and I had given up on those strength training classes I loved so much. Most of my workouts were walks outside, or strength training with fitness apps in the basement.

Now, I’m pushing 50! In the warmer months, I like to walk the trails outside and listen to podcasts while I rack up the steps on my smart watch. I can usually get in 4 mile walks a few times a week. Also, I have found that the Denise Austin app is the one that works best for me when I want to do an at-home workout. Maybe I’ll pick up tennis again in a few years, but this is where I’m at right now.

Currently, we are on the verge of spring. We had a few 60 degree days last week, so I got out there on the trails! I’m working on pulling myself out of the winter slump. Lately, my teen daughter has been dragging my husband and I to the rec center, so maybe those cardio machines might soon be part of my routine again. I’ll let you know how it goes.
